The key question of the project: why are people so inclined to diminish their own worth and importance? A character who bandages themselves serves as the central metaphor of the series. Under the weight of social expectations, choosing silence and looking away often feels far easier than revealing one’s true self. Each work shows a different face, a sign that we stop being ourselves when we live for the comfort of others.
silence
unspoken
oil on canvas
24 × 48 in (61 × 122 cm)
The character bandages her own mouth. No one has silenced her; she has chosen silence herself.
The work speaks about the words we hold back out of fear of being judged, rejected or misunderstood, and about how silence slowly becomes a habit and then part of who we are.
unseen
oil on canvas
24 × 48 in (61 × 122 cm)
The character’s eyes are bandaged, but the wind is tearing the bandage away. The moment stays suspended, and the question remains unanswered: was she binding her eyes or setting them free?
The work leaves the viewer at the edge of a choice: to keep hiding from the world, or to finally see and be seen.
unHEARD
oil on canvas
24 × 48 in (61 × 122 cm)
The character covers her own ears, shutting out not only the noise of the world but also her own inner voice.
The work speaks about refusing to listen to oneself: when other people’s expectations become so loud that our own desires can no longer be heard.
